Unlike a standard hijab, the khimar falls lower and provides more generous coverage of the upper body. It is generally worn with an abaya or a long, loose-fitting outfit.
The khimar is a veil that covers the head, neck and chest — it needs to be worn with a lower garment (abaya, maxi dress). The jilbab, by contrast, is a loose garment that covers the whole body, from head to toe, often in one or two pieces. In short: the khimar covers the top, while the jilbab covers everything.
The size depends on the coverage required. A short khimar (about 70-90 cm) reaches the chest and is suitable for everyday wear. A mid-length khimar (100-120 cm) covers down to the waist. A long khimar (130 cm and over) falls to the knees or lower for maximum coverage. For a jazz khimar, the size is usually standard thanks to the adjustable headband.
