An undercap for a veil does two things that you only notice when it is missing: it stops the Hijab from slipping and keeps your hair where it should be. Without one, chiffon shifts backwards all day, however you arrange it.
A jersey ring that you pull on. It is the quickest, the most discreet under a fine veil, and suitable for short or tied-up hair.
Two panels that cross over the forehead and can be adjusted. Depending on the adjustment, it reveals more or less of the forehead and holds long hair more securely.
An under-Hijab cap that also covers the neck. It is the essential option for days when the veil is thin or pale, and it avoids the need for an extra layer.
The only one whose function is not support: its smooth lining prevents friction on the lengths. It can also be worn on its own at night.

The rule is counter-intuitive: choose the cap to match the veil, not your skin tone. A light cap under light chiffon disappears; a dark cap under the same chiffon shows through.

No, but it makes all the difference with slippery fabrics. A jersey Hijab stays in place on its own; chiffon, silk or satin will move without a base layer.
A Hijab with an integrated cap combines the two and does not move between layers, but its parts cannot be changed independently. A separate cap can be replaced and washed more often.
A tight cap worn all day can mark the roots. Choose a size that holds without compressing, and satin if your lengths are fragile.
Two or three are enough: one to wear, one in the wash and one in your bag. They need washing more often than veils.
