Hijab style varies according to the chosen format and the occasion. The most popular formats are the rectangular Hijab (180x70 cm), which is tied by hand for a personalised drape, and the pull-on Hijab (tube or integrated cap) for quick, pin-free wear. For an everyday chic Hijab, the pull-on jersey style is the most practical. For events, a tied chiffon Hijab with volume is more elegant.

The word « veil » is a general term for any fabric covering the head. The Hijab (حِجَاب) is the specific term used in Muslim culture for the veil that covers the head, neck and chest while leaving the face visible. Other types of Islamic veils exist: the Khimar (longer, covering down to the bust or lower), the niqab (covering the face except the eyes) and the burqa (covering completely).
The Hijab is a scarf or shawl tied or draped around the head and neck. The Khimar is a longer, more covering veil, generally with an integrated headband, which falls over the chest and sometimes to the waist or lower. The Hijab is more versatile and easier to style; the Khimar offers more coverage without the effort of arranging it.
For beginners, we recommend the jersey Hijab: it is stretchy, does not slip, needs no pin and offers perfect opacity. The pull-on format is the easiest to put on. Once you are comfortable, you can explore the Medina silk Hijab (fluid, elegant) and the chiffon Hijab (airy, for occasions), which require a little more tying technique.
Care depends on the fabric. The jersey Hijab can be machine-washed at 30°C and dries quickly. The Medina silk Hijab and chiffon should be hand-washed or washed on a delicate cycle, and ironed at a low temperature (or not at all for crease-resistant Medina silk). Avoid tumble drying delicate fabrics. Store your Hijabs folded or hung up to avoid creases.
A good starting point is a base of 5 to 8 Hijabs: 2-3 neutral ones (black, white, taupe) in jersey for everyday wear, 1-2 in Medina silk in colours that go with your Abayas, and 1-2 in chiffon or satin for occasions. You can then build up your collection with seasonal colours and on-trend styles.
